April 2008 Reston Environmental Action Update
Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings.
Clotheslines in Reston
Thanks to REACT members Christine Mason, Najwa Saad and Claudia Thompson-Deahl for sorting out the clothesline issue in Reston! They learned that clotheslines are permitted, as long as they are in a screened location approved by the Reston Association Design Review Board.
Christine and Najwa created a flyer explaining the regulations and the reasons to consider hanging laundry to dry – inside or out. For example, by line-drying all your laundry, you can reduce household carbon emissions by 1500 pounds and save more than $100 per year.
If you would like to spread the word in your neighborhood, email info@restonenvironmentalaction.org or call 703-620-0151 and let us know how many flyers you would like us to deliver to you. Or pick some up at our table at the RA Earth Day Festival at the Nature Center on April 19.
PROJECTS
Reston Recycles! & Close the Loop
Neighborhoods that participate in Reston Recycles! receive extra brochures to keep on hand when new residents move in. Please let us know if you have depleted your stash and need more. Those brochures can have an impact. After Bob Mowbray supplied a new resident with his cluster’s Reston Recycles! brochure and a Household Hazardous Waste brochure, the neighbor removed paint cans from the curb and eliminated non-recyclable plastic from his recycling bin!
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care Next Meeting: Tuesday, April 15, 7:00, 1684 Moorings Dr.
“I’m getting excited about composting!” That’s a quote from a resident who attended the Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care neighborhood meeting in Wethersfield Cluster. Residents discussed pesticides, fertilizers, native plants, rain barrels and composting. Spring is a great time of year to hold one of these meetings in your neighborhood. Email or call us and schedule yours now. You provide a meeting place for neighbors and we provide a flyer to announce the meeting, handouts for those who participate, and committee members to present the information.
Drive Less, Breathe Better
Spring is also a great time for walking and biking. Where do the trails near your home lead? Do your neighbors know? Hold a Drive Less, Breathe Better meeting in your neighborhood and we will supply them with trail maps, bus schedules and more. Send us an email or give us a call to schedule a meeting.
Reducing Workplace Waste Next Meeting: Wednesday April 9, 7:30 pm, 2011 Approach Lane
Although many workplaces want to be more environmentally friendly, they are not always sure where to start. To ease businesses and organizations into greener practices, we have scheduled a workplace fair for June 26. Companies such as electronics recyclers, energy auditors, recycled product and green cleaning suppliers will be invited to present information on their services.
Next REACT Board Meeting: Tuesday, April 29, 7:45 p.m., RCC Hunters Woods, Room 1
