COMMITTEE REPORTS

Reducing Workplace Waste  Next Meeting: Monday, Sept 17, 6 PM, 2011 Approach Lane

Thank you, members, for making a connection between two businesses which reduced waste for one, and provided a resource for the other.  Last month we asked for suggestions for SHW Group, an architectural firm that wanted to dispose of their display samples without having to send them into the waste stream.   REACT member Nick Abrash contacted Angela’s Happy Stamper to see if they could use the tile, porcelain, etc. for their classes.  He then picked up the samples from SHW Group and delivered them to Angela’s Happy Stamper, which was delighted to receive them.

We are also pleased to report that Reston Community Center at Lake Anne has implemented mixed paper recycling.  Employees were eager to start recycling paper and were able to take advantage of the new county requirements.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

The committee has completed the brochure that explains what and how to recycle household hazardous waste at the county’s I-66 disposal facility.  Committee members gathered information from several areas of the county website, as well as other sources, and assembled it into one handy brochure.  A copy will be mailed to you in the fall, but if you would like one sooner, feel free to contact us.

With that project complete, the committee will disband.

Environmental Yard and Garden Care  Next Meeting: Tuesday, Aug 14, 7 PM, 1684 Moorings Drive

The committee is planning neighborhood meetings to begin next winter.  With the luxury of a long timeline, members are putting their efforts into carefully crafting the meeting handout.

Drive Less, Breathe Better

The committee continues to plan for activities in the fall.

Next REACT Board Meeting:  Monday, August 20, 7:30 PM, RCC Lake Anne, Room A
