Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings!
Next REACT Board Meeting: Tuesday, July 31, 7:30 p.m. Lake Anne, Room B
PROJECTS
As a REACT member, chances are you are a stellar recycler. But what about those neighbors of yours? Are they as knowledgeable as you are? Reston Recycles! is an easy way to help make sure they have the information to keep the wrong kind of plastic out of their bin and clear up other recycling confusion. It involves a little volunteer time over a two month period and so far, every neighborhood effort has been successful!
If you have already completed Reston Recycles!, encourage your neighbors to buy recycled-content products with Close the Loop. If you have already completed Close the Loop, congratulations! Please tell your Reston friends of your success so that they may consider participating in these projects.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Reducing Workplace Waste
Thank you for providing referrals of workplaces requesting more information on the new mixed paper and cardboard recycling requirements for businesses that begins this month. We are happy to meet with employees and provide information on reducing waste.
Do you know a teacher, artist, or anyone who can use small display samples of carpet, ceramic tile, porcelain or brick? A Reston architectural firm, SHW Group, has asked us for suggestions of where they may donate their samples rather than throw them in the trash. If you have ideas, please email info@restonenvironmentalaction.org.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
The committee learned that the county does not encourage neighborhood household hazardous waste collections. They do not have the staff to accept large amounts of waste and they are concerned about liability issues for residents transporting their neighbors’ hazardous waste. However, the county will host a collection day in Reston and if it is successful, plan to have one per year in Reston.
The committee would like to encourage residents to properly dispose of their waste and has drafted a brochure for individuals. Once it is complete, it will be available at events where REACT is represented. A copy will also be sent to Reston Recycles! neighborhoods. The brochure provides information on what to include with hazardous waste and how to dispose it at the I-66 facility.
Environmental Yard and Garden Care Next Meeting: Tuesday, 7:00 pm, July 17, 2218 Wheelwright Court
The committee continues to plan neighborhood meetings which will begin next winter to provide basics on pesticides, native plants, composting and rain barrels. For residents who would like more in-depth information, we plan to hold Reston-wide meetings on each of the topics individually.
Drive Less, Breathe Better
The committee is pleased that Reston Association is forming an advisory committee to address physical improvements to promote walking and biking. Their goals mesh nicely with our committee’s efforts to change attitudes through our neighborhood meetings and encouraging participation in the International Walk to School Day.
