August 2008 Reston Environmental Action Update

Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings.

Energy Efficiency Committee

According to Co-op America, “The quickest, easiest and most powerful way to move at the speed and scale necessary to counteract the worst effects of climate change is by vastly ramping up our energy efficiency efforts – at home, at work, and as a nation and world.  It’s the closest thing we’ve got to a magic bullet that will solve the climate crisis, but all of us have to be willing to do our part, right now.”

REACT is forming a new committee to help Reston do our part.  If you’d like to join, contact Mary Brown at info@earthlink.net or 703-620-0151.

PROJECTS

Reston Recycles! & Close the Loop

Think about the impact of simply placing items in a recycling bin. We are preventing many pounds of mining and manufacturing waste caused by extracting and processing virgin materials.  Using recycled materials to make new products saves energy and other resources, reduces greenhouse gases and pollution, and reduces deforestation and damage to fragile ecosystems.

But not everyone is sure what exactly goes in the bin and what should be left out.  If you saw the televised July Reston Association board meeting, you may have caught the recycling quiz presented by the RA Green Team, and the REACT recycling display.  You can sign up to use the display in your building, cluster, or street to help keep your neighbors on the right recycling track.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care Next Meeting: Tues., Aug 5, 7:00 p.m., 1684 Moorings Dr.

Just last month we reported on a Moorings Yard and Garden meeting, and already one of the participants has purchased a rain barrel, allowing more rain water to filter through the ground, rather than rush to Reston’s lakes carrying pollutants and trash.

As autumn approaches, it’s a good time to hold a Yard and Garden meeting in your neighborhood to help residents turn those falling leaves into soil-enriching compost.

Drive Less, Breathe Better

Speaking of approaching seasons, if your autumn involves children walking to school, contact the Drive Less, Breathe Better committee which has been speaking with the Fairfax County PTA about promoting Walking School Buses in Reston.

Reducing Workplace Waste

Thanks again for your support of the REACT Workplace Fair last month.  We continue to receive calls and emails regarding helping workplaces lessen their environmental impact spurred by the fair.

Next REACT Board Meeting:  Tuesday, August 19, 7:30 p.m., 2011 Approach Lane

Check www.restonenvironmentalaction.org for meeting dates, and other REACT information.  If you would like to participate in a project or join a committee, contact Mary Brown at info@restonenvironmentalaction.org or 703-620-0151.
