July 2009 Reston Environmental Action Update

Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings.

Meet Fellow REACT Members

Bob MowbrayÙs tour of the U.S. Botanic Garden was such a success that members requested a “Part 2” for the areas that were not covered.   Check upcoming Member Updates for details.

This month, youÙre invited to join members in collecting litter along the Reston Association path between Headlands Circle and South Lakes Village Center on July 25.  REACT adopted this area through RAÙs Adopt-A-Spot program several years ago.  It is a short stretch and generally 3 to 4 members cover it in approximately 45 minutes.  With other members joining us this month, it could be a quick clean up.  We will then meet at StarbuckÙs before heading back to our cars.

If you would like to join us, contact Mary Brown at cernybrown@earthlink.net or 703-620-0151.  We will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25 near the Boston Ridge Playfield on Headlands Circle, off of Sunrise Valley Drive.

Why Hold a Yard and Garden, Recycling or Drive Less Meeting in Your Neighborhood?

We frequently see research showing the influence of neighborsÙ involvement in environmental actions.  Here is an excerpt from the most recent information we came across from Science Daily, June 30, 2009:

“People are more likely to enroll in conservation programs if their neighbors do . . . ‘That's the power of social norms,Ù he said. ‘It's like recycling. If you see your neighbors doing it, you're more likely to do it.Ù (Jianguo "Jack" Liu of Michigan State University (MSU). . . Added co-author and MSU scientist Frank Lupi: ‘Simply by taking account of the social norms, more conservation can be obtained from limited conservation budgets.”

Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care Next Meeting: Tues., July 7, 7:00 p.m., 1684 Moorings Dr.

The next neighborhood meeting will be held in Soapstone Cluster on July 26.  To learn more about holding a meeting in your neighborhood, contact Bob Mowbray at rnmowbray@att.net .

Drive Less, Breathe Better

If youÙd like to hold a meeting in your neighborhood or building to encourage residents to drive less, contact Steve Cerny at cernybrown@earthlink.net .

And when you do drive, if you have an older car or truck with a combined fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon (mpg) or less, you may qualify for a cash rebate of up to $4500 if you purchase or lease a new car which is 10 mpg more efficient than the one you trade in.  See http://www.cars.gov/ for more information.  We hope that anyone taking advantage of the rebate will purchase a vehicle with a much higher fuel efficiency than the combined 22 mpg (for cars) required by the law!
