June 2007 Reston Environmental Action Update

Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings!

Next REACT Board Meeting:  Tuesday, June 26, Lake Anne, Room B

PROJECTS

Reston Recycles!

After several years of colorful service, our main display board is being retired.  Well, recycled, actually.  Thanks to your dues and donations, we have purchased a more permanent display board.  Of course, all usable parts from the old display will be transferred onto the new one.  Same information, just more securely attached.  So now there’s one more reason to start the project in your neighborhood.

Close the Loop

Vantage Hill residents are in the planning stages of setting up their Close the Loop meeting.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Reducing Workplace Waste

Kate Sicola with Fairfax County sent us a toolkit the County is using to assist businesses in complying with the requirement to recycle mixed paper and cardboard beginning July 11, 2007.  If you work in Reston and your employer does not provide mixed paper (office paper, magazines, newspaper, mail etc.) and cardboard recycling, please contact us so we can help you work with them to make the transition.  Or, if this is an issue you would like to work on, let us know.

Hazardous Waste Disposal  Next meeting:  Wednesday, June 20, 6:00 pm, 2011 Approach Lane.

The committee has drafted a handout explaining how and why to organize a neighborhood household hazardous waste collection with information on what can be collected, and how to prepare and transport it.  We also learned that the one hauler we located that accepts household hazardous waste, no longer does because, as a business, they cannot use the I-66 drop-off.  The committee will check with the county to see if there are issues with residents bring large amounts of hazardous waste.

Environmental Yard and Garden Care  Next Meeting: Tuesday, July 17, 2218 Wheelwright Court

The committee plans to conduct neighborhood meetings beginning next January or February that provide basics on pesticides, native plants, composting and rain barrels.  For residents who would like more in-depth information, we plan to hold Reston-wide meetings on each of the topics individually.

Drive Less, Breathe Better  Next Meeting:  Monday, June 25, 7:30 pm, RCC Lake Anne.

Committee members met with Glenn Hiner from the county’s transportation department to learn about county residential and employer programs to promote transportation services such as employer-owned vans, Flex Cars, Guaranteed Ride Home and ride sharing.  He gave us displays with brochures and bus schedules and will provide us with more schedules for our neighborhood program.

The committee also plans to approach the elementary schools about participating in International Walk to School week next fall.
