March 2008 Reston Environmental Action Update

Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings.

There are 2 more neighborhood meetings to choose from!  In addition to recycling, you can bring Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care, and Drive Less, Breathe Better information to your street.  After months of collecting information, two committees have begun holding meetings in neighborhoods to change neighbors’ behavior in yard and garden care and transportation.  If you would like to participate, please email infor@restonenvironmentalaction.org, or call 703-620-0051.

PROJECTS

Reston Recycles! & Close the Loop

You have no time to make dinner and you grab a container of prepared food at the grocery store.  What do you do with the plastic container – put it in your recycling bin or throw it away?  You know that because it is not a bottle or jug, you cannot recycle it.  But do your neighbors know?  Are they contaminating the loads of recyclables with the wrong kind of plastic?  We have an easy way to fix that.  Encourage increased recycling, re-using and reducing in your neighborhood with Reston Recycles! and Close the Loop.  Email info@restonenvironmentalaction.org for more details.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care

Committee members have completed their handout and display and are preparing for their first neighborhood meeting in Wethersfield Cluster this month.  Residents will receive information on pesticides, fertilizers, native plants, rain barrels and composting.

Drive Less, Breathe Better

The committee’s first neighborhood meeting was held in Moorings cluster.  Participants heard the many reasons to decrease our amount of solo driving as well as information on taking the bus and subway, telecommuting services, ride-sharing, and more.  As a result, one member who normally drives to Union Station once a week plans to try the bus and Metro and catch up on his reading.  Two other residents are considering a trip to Tysons on the bus, without a worry about parking.  Another resident is combining more vehicle trips, and another has increased car pooling.

The committee would like Reston to join other localities in encouraging walking and biking to school through the International Walk to School Day.  If you would like to help, please contact us.

Reducing Workplace Waste  Next Meeting:  Thursday, March 13, 7:30 pm, 2011 Approach Lane

The committee is planning a fair for employees and employers seeking information on how to save energy, water, and other resources.  Committee members plan to invite service providers such as electronics recyclers, energy auditors, recycled product and green cleaning suppliers and others to the event.

Next REACT Board Meeting:  Tuesday, March 25, 7:30 p.m., RCC Hunters Woods, Room 1
