Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Saturday, May 3   9:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

Fairfax County is holding a household hazardous waste collection for county residents at the Reston Park and Ride at the intersection of Fox Mill Road and Reston Parkway this Saturday from 9am to 2pm.  To learn what is included (paint, pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs, etc.) check your REACT Household Hazardous Waste Disposal brochure, or visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/recycling.

In addition, up to 5 medium-sized boxes of paper per household can be shredded and recycled for no charge.  Remove ringed binders and binder clips.

PROJECTS

Reston Recycles! & Close the Loop

Don’t toss your yogurt containers!  Containers made with #5 plastic (yogurt, margarine tubs, etc.) are now being collected at Whole Foods.  Wash thoroughly and place in the container at the exit.  They will be transported to Recycline which will use them for Preserve products, such as toothbrushes and razors.  (And, if you use these products, you can send them back to Recycline to be recycled into benches and decks! http://www.recycline.com/recycling.html)

Spread more recycling facts to your neighbors – start Reston Recycles! in your neighborhood.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care  Next Meeting: Tues., May 20, 7:00 p.m., 1684 Moorings Dr.

Every 40lb bag of lawn fertilizer contains the fossil-fuel equivalent of 2.5 gallons of gasoline (Source: Safelawns).  65% of the fertilizer put on each yard will end up in runoff (Source: Natural Home Magazine).  Share these and other sad facts with your neighbors at a neighborhood Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden meeting.  We will then cheer everyone up with information on creating a neighborhood with beauty that is kinder to the watershed and wildlife.

Drive Less, Breathe Better

Several of the Reston residents that visited our table at the Reston Association Earth Day Festival told us they would ride the bus more often if they were more familiar with the routes.  We can help with that!  Invite your neighbors to a Drive Less meeting and we will supply bus schedules specific to your neighborhood along with trail maps and other commuting resource information.

Reducing Workplace Waste

Ten businesses/service providers will have information on environmental products and services on display at the REACT Green Workplace Fair on June 26 at the Reston Community Center at Lake Anne from 1:30p.m. to 3:30p.m.  If you know of any businesses that help workplaces improve their environmental impact, please let us know at info@restonenvironmentalaction.org.

Next REACT Board Meeting:  Tuesday, June 3, 7:45 p.m., 2011 Approach Lane
