Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings!
Save the date: REACT Annual Meeting will be held Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 at Reston Community Center at Lake Anne.
PROJECTS
The Sycamores project is on hold, but for an encouraging reason. The management plans to add cardboard and mixed paper recycling. With the new county requirements that went into effect in July, all apartments and condominiums built before July, 2007, must provide cardboard and mixed paper recycling. However, The Sycamores goes beyond these requirements and offers plastic bottle and can recycling. REACT member Vishnu
Ramaraj is working with The Sycamores management and we are pleased that they continue to provide more recycling services.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Reducing Workplace Waste Next Meeting: Monday, Sept 17, 6 PM, 2011 Approach Lane
Are you friends with a local business owner or manager? Committee members are compiling a list of environmental actions taken by businesses that we can share with residents. A personal approach tends to have a greater impact. If you can spend a few minutes with a business you are familiar with to record their green actions, we can add them to our list. To get the conversation started, we have a brochure that lists several ways that workplaces can lessen their environmental load. Please let us know if we can send one to you.
Environmental Yard and Garden Care Next Meeting: Thursday, Sept 20, 7 PM, 2218 Wheelwright Court
A cluster contacted the committee with questions about the pesticides and herbicides used by their contractor. Committee members were pleased to have the opportunity to learn what chemicals were used by contractors and more about them. We researched the chemicals used by the cluster and provided the information to the cluster board. Although some of the environmental and health problems found with the chemicals only occurred with spills or misapplication, the committee believed there was enough concern to recommend switching to natural lawn care. We realize that it’s not easy to work with a contractor to make these changes, but by taking gradual steps, you can eventually turn your neighborhood turf into a healthy area rather than a depository for chemicals that may harm bees, songbirds, and children.
Drive Less, Breathe Better Next Meeting: Tuesday, Sept 18, 7:30, RCC Lake Anne, Room B
