September 2008 Reston Environmental Action Member Update

Everyone is welcome to attend all board and committee meetings.

Save the Date!

The REACT Annual Meeting will be held Wednesday, October 22, at the Reston Association Glade Room on Glade Drive at the corner of Soapstone Drive.  The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. with refreshments and socializing at 7:00 p.m.

Our guest speaker is Kate Sicola, of the Fairfax County Division of Solid Waste and Recycling.  She will answer questions we often hear such as “How do I know recyclables are really recycled”? and “Why can’t we recycle #5 plastic, or cloth or other items?”  If you have specific questions you’d like Kate to answer at the meeting, send an email to Thea Kreinik and we’ll pass them on to Kate before the meeting.

PROJECTS

Reston Recycles! & Close the Loop

Name Change:  As you know, we recently combined Reston Recycles! and Close the Loop into one project, making it even easier for neighborhoods to participate.  The problem is that exclamation point just doesn’t look right anymore.  Tell us how you would like to see this new combo written.  Click onto this one-question survey and vote for your favorite:  Reston Recycles&Close the Loop, Reston Recycles/Close the Loop, Reston Recycles-Close the Loop, Reston Recycles*Close the Loop, Reston Recycles+Close the Loop or Reston Recycles2Close the Loop.

R4 Collection Day:  If you work or live in Town Center, or will be in the area on September 17 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. stop by the REACT table in the Pavilion at the R4 Collection Day sponsored by Reston Town Center.  They will collect various electronics, compact florescent lights, bicycles, eye glasses, hearing aids, gently used coats, and documents for shredding.  REACT will provide information on how and what to recycle for residents and businesses.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Eco-Friendly Yard and Garden Care Next Meeting: Tues., Sep 2, 7:00 p.m., 1684 Moorings Dr.

Energy Efficiency Committee

According to Co-op America, “The quickest, easiest and most powerful way to move at the speed and scale necessary to counteract the worst effects of climate change is by vastly ramping up our energy efficiency efforts – at home, at work, and as a nation and world.  It’s the closest thing we’ve got to a magic bullet that will solve the climate crisis, but all of us have to be willing to do our part, right now.”

REACT is forming a new committee to help Reston do our part.  If you’d like to join, contact Mona Khalil.

Next REACT Board Meeting:  Tuesday, September 23, 7:30 p.m., 2011 Approach Lane
