November/December 2006 Reston Environmental Action Update

This is the first of periodic emails that you will receive as a member of REACT. They will provide information on recent and upcoming REACT activities. Notice that you are invited to attend all Board and committee meetings.

 

PROJECTS

Reston Recycles!

Congratulations to Ridgewood Cluster, the 6th neighborhood to complete Reston Recycles!  They increased their recycling by 9% and 8% of the residents no longer include items that are not accepted by the county.

Wheelwright Cluster is currently carrying out the project and will have results to report soon.

Close the Loop

Wethersfield Cluster is participating in Close the Loop, a follow-up project to Reston Recycles!  Moorings Cluster is initiating the project on December 3, as will Coleson Cluster on December 10.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Reducing Workplace Waste

Committee members will discuss how to promote this project and how to publicize the example of the Reston Association’s waste reduction at a meeting on Dec 7 at 7:30 p.m. at 2011 Approach Ln.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

This committee will discuss strategies to increase proper disposal of hazardous waste and is setting a meeting date for January.

Environmental Yard and Garden Care

Project ideas to promote alternatives to synthetic pesticides and to encourage methods that protect the watershed and biodiversity will be discussed at a meeting tentatively set for January 11.

Drive Less, Breathe Better

Increasing mass transit, biking and walking will be discussed at a December 5th meeting at 4:30 p.m. at the Lake Anne Coffee House.
